UNIRESORT'S TOP 10 TIPS FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS-Trust me this will make your life easier.
1) GET ORGANIZED- Students have a lot of paperwork, assignments and information overload and this can be very stressful, so putting in a place a good GTD system ( get things done) will enable you to manage your time, keep you focused and disciplined.
2) AVOID CREDIT CARDS-How many of you have a credit card? How many of you wish you didn't due to the fees and temptation of buying things that you don't really need? If this is you then cut up your credit card now. Banks are not offering you credit cards out of the kindness of their hearts and although it may seem like you are getting a great deal there is always a catch. Students are easy targets for them as they are typically short of money.
3) TRACK YOUR SPENDING-With all the difficulties of juggling expenses it is a good time to start tracking what you are spending. Keep a record of what you spend every week or even keep every receipt. When it comes to the end of the week make a note of what your purchasing and see if it was actually worth it or not. Once you start to realise the things you don't actually need you will make important conclusions about it.
4) TEXTBOOKS- They can be very expensive so buying used ones where possible and selling them once you have finished will cut costs. There is a very rare chance that you will need to keep the books once you have finished your course.
5) NIGHTS OUT- Of course going out is a common thing that we all do at Uni. Heading out with friends to the bars, parties and nightclubs etc. So you don't spend your entire money only take out a certain amount beforehand and leave your bank card at home.
6) USE YOUR CAMPUS- You will be spending a lot of time here so getting to know it sooner will help you when all the stress comes at once. You will be able to find the quite places to study or know when to avoid the busiest times at the cafes. Knowing the campus you will be able to utilise the facilities better. Campuses often hold free/cheap entertainment which will be better for your finances.
7)YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK-Befriending as many people as possible at Uni weather it be students or lecturers, it will make it easier for you when you need someone to talk to come exam time. They will be the people you can trust. Also look to join groups that have the same interests as you.
8) CARS- Cars are useful and if you have one already then just take this into consideration if you wish. When you take into account all the extra costs that come with a car such as maintenance, insurance and road tax it can leave you very broke at the end of each month. Public transport in Brisbane is so easy and you will find that buses run to your University from Garden City Shopping Centre regularly.
9) BAD INFLUENCES- At University there will always be the students that are rich and the students that walk into debt without a second thought. Be careful no-one leads you astray. Beware of lifestyle inflation! If you get accustomed to another person's way of living it can be difficult to drop back to the lifestyle that is more appropriate to your expenditure.
10) APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AT UNI- This will be one of the best experiences of your life so make the most of it. Be careful not to have too much fun, you still want to walk away with a degree. On the other hand too much work and no play can lead to you neglecting friends and not gaining other experiences. SO MAKE SURE YOU WORK HARD AND PLAY HARD.

To Do: QUEENSLANDER! Posted on 25-May-2011

It's Origin night... if you're a Blues supporter you might want to close the screen now. Just joking - I promise to be as unbiased as possible in encouraging those new to the sport to get involved tonight.
State of Origin is the annual Rugby League battle between the leagues best players. In a state verses state match up, this is a best of three battle that conjures up the most fierce competition between players that had only built on the rivalry between the Queensland and New South Wales.
This year, QLD is farewelling it's captain and going for 6 in a row. It's a mighty feat that has never been achieved before. It's also a great chance to experience some of the best rugby league in the world.
Starting tonight, why don't you gather some friends, encourage everyone to dress is Maroon or Blue and spend a couple of hours cheering for your home side.
I'll be wearing my Maroon all day on Wednesday! And backing it up with Reds for the Queensland Reds this Sunday.
After the Firebirds taking the Netball trophy home on the weekend, this is sure to be a great week in Queensland sport - I can't wait to see Queensland on top, going three for three!!

I am a massive folk music fan. I love the meaningful lyrics, engaging melodies and the knowledge the artist has put their heart and soul into the music they sing.
So when I heard three of my favourite femals artists were collaborating, well I happy danced till my feet ached.
Holly Throsby, Sally Seltmann and Sarah Blasko have their album available for live streaming all this week through
Triple J online here and you can learn more about the artists through their
website seekerloverkeeper.com
I'm listening to it as I write this and I can't help my tap my foot and smile wistfully. Enjoy!

I read the book, saw the movie and loved them both. As per usual, the book was a more involved and thoroughly engaging story. But as a fan already, I really enjoyed the characters coming to life. But I'm not a professional critic, so listen to my favourite critic review the movie... and definitely read the book too!

Are you looking for a cheap but delicious bite to eat next time your in the city? You might be thinking cheap and delicious is an oxymoron, but thanks to the competitive nature of the city lunch trade, it's not hard to seek out good food when the dollars are tight. Leave the "Golden Arches" for another day and enjoy a multicultural feast by getting into Japanese curry, Sushi, Toasties and real burgers.
Check out this
blog on ourbrisbane.com for more suggestions in and around the city to seek out this lunch time

Marc Fennell's review here why Source Code is the best movie of the week to see... I have to admit, I am a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan so I'm pretty keen, jelly bean!
ANYWHERE THEATRE includes circus, comedy and drama that works anywhere but a traditional theatre venue. They will show up in parks, a backyard, a train, an elevator. The thought of not having to wear heels to an event like this makes me sold to go.

Eat: Vego Heave-Ho Posted on 05-May-2011

I know there's a lot of vego's in UR - the vego pizza is always one of the first to go. So - I've thought about dedicating a few blogs to the many different types of diets found in UR. If you have a great recipe - then email it through to marketing@uniresort.com.au to share with your fellow UniResorters.
I challenge you to give this recipe I found a go - it looks scrumptious and very healthy for you!
Check out the Chickpea & Mushroom Tagine recipe from Student Recipes.com here

I love yoga. I know many of you think it's not the hardest workout in the world, but yoga will show you how to stretch and open up your body like never before.
The poses increase blood flow and open up your joints and body like it normally isn't. The oxygenated blood that rushes to your extremeties and organs is the best thing for you - everyone knows that!
So - next time you've had enough of pounding the pavement, or you want to indulge in an exercise that will make you feel alive then definitely give yoga a go. I found this great local group just right up the road
Check out Naturally Yoga at
www.naturallyyoga.com.au and let me know how you go

One of my favourite clothing stores, and one I don't get to check out very often because parking in the city is too hard, is Garnsis Boutique.
Their style is eclectic, well priced and right on trend. It's perfect for items to layer or the occasional statment piece for a night out.
Luckily for me - they've just announced their online store! I love online shopping and with the great styling tips this is an easy way to shop.
Check out their website here at

So, I know I've done similar blogs like this before - but I'm trying to choose somewhere for dinner tonight and I want to try something new, but just can't seem to decide!
I've scrolled the Brisbane dining blogs, but still can't make a decision.
Why don't you have a looksie through these links and let me know where you think they best place for dinner is tonight.

Creamfields is the national Dance music festival that stays true to the house music loyalists. If you're a dance fan then you don't want to miss the exciting line up including Deadmau5, Martin Solvieg, Skrillex, Chuckie & Wynter Gordon.

Try not to spread the news... the fewer people who know means the fewer trying to buy tickets!
The line-up is awesome and the organisers have gone a long way to securing some really exclusive acts for 2011 - Kanye West straight after his most sensational album to date is enough to get me excited.
Check
out the line up here and if I was cruel enough I would suggest buying your tickets on the 6th of May. But I'll be honest, they go on sale the 5th...
Funny, free and freakin’ awesome.

Eat: Mos Burger Posted on 08-Apr-2011

I was in Singapore recently and introduced by a friend to the exciting fast food trend MOS Burger.
Originally from Japan, MOS Burger offers actualy healthy alternatives to fast food, like rice buns and lettuce leaves instead of bread.
They also do have the originally bun there too plus lots of great new flavours like Unagi, Teriyaki and Kakiage.
The new store is due in Sunnybank anytime now.

To Do: Home Festival Posted on 05-Apr-2011

I just stumbed across this wonderful festival being held this weekend.
To celebrate all things green, clean and beautifully homely, Home Festival is here.
Home grown talent, home made products, DIY home improvements.. can I say home again? It's such a wonderful place to be and this festival sounds equally delightful
Check out the
website here for more info and get your green-home thumb on this weekend

Keen for a Doco this week? Listen to
Marc's review of Waiting for Superman - maybe this one's for you?

f you're looking for somewhere cosy and intimate to have a drink,
then head to one of Brisbane's growing number of small bars. They have
atmosphere, a relaxed vibe and often a long list of drinks and
cocktails.
Instead of going to big clubs, jostling people to get to the bar, you
can have a drink with a few friends somewhere classy and cosmopolitan.
Try these places around Brisbane:
Canvas on Logan Road at Woolloongabba has won popularity awards for best bar in Brisbane. It's definitely worth a visit.
You'll find Uptown basically across the road from Canvas. It's a laid back drinks lounge on the second floor of the Crosstown Eating House.
Junk Bar
in Ashgrove is like hanging out in Nana's lounge but my Nana never
served cold alcoholic beverages! The Junk Bar is the ultimate in retro
flavour, with vinyl tunes playing.
It's been around for a while now but Lychee Lounge in West End is a long-time favourite with those who love cocktails. It's everything a good bar should be.
Room 60
at Kelvin Grove is a tiny, vintage-inspired place to relax and unwind. They host events like acoustic music, artist talks and
cabaret. At Room 60 you'll find shoes up the wall, boardgames to play
and constant surprises.

If I'm looking for a little inspiration or a chance to escape the busy world for a couple of hours, then a trip to GOMA is top of my list. This modern art facility has been drawing some of the best collections in the world to our shores and never fails to present entertaining, thought provoking and interesting exhibitions.
Right now, Art in the 21st Century is exploring the first decade of our new millennium. Focusing exclusively on art created and aquired within the years 2000 - 2010, the exhibition takes up the entire GOMA space.
It will draw on the Gallery’s extensive contemporary collections and
also feature new commissions and a select group of loans from Australian
and international lenders. The exhibition will be broad in its
geographic and generational scope including over 200 works by more than
140 artists from over 40 countries.
Complementing the exhibition is the 21 Century Cinema Program, featuring three different types of film genres. These include A New Tomorrow which exhibits films that look into the future, Unseen showcasing the newest film makers of this decade and Video Witness an exploration into how new digital technology helps to capture and present the news of our rapidly changing world.
The exhibition is free, though you will need to purchase tickets for the film.
Check out the
website here for more information.
The exhibition is running till the 25th April

Well this concert was enough to make me squeal with delight! Four of Australia's hottest young acts right now teaming together for one cheap as chips gig.
The best part is - it's not for about 2 months - plenty of time to save up the $22 ticket price and download their albums if you haven't got them already.
If you're keen to check out Hungry Kids of Hungary, The Chemist, Andy Bull and Daniel Lee Kendall all in one night then
go to this link and sort your tickets out ASAP.
What a great chance to support some young Aussie muso's and have a cheap night out.

The rebuilding of our great state continues. Towns like Grantham and Toowoomba will continue to feel the devestation of their town for years to come. Likewise, the rebuildling of homes in Brisbane will take sometime.
For the easiest way to make your contribution -
buy this CD! The Flood Relief Cd is only $21.30 from JB HiFi and contains classic songs from international and local artists. It's a 3 CD deal from artists like Beyonce, Bon Jovi, Powder Finger, The Script and many many more.
Check it out - buy it and enjoy! It's a great deal for a great cause

Sweet tooth or not - chocolate done well is tempting for everyone and the new Maz Brenner store at South Bank is the definition of good chocolate. Strolling through the menu uncovers such delights at the American Marshmellow Hot Chocolate, or the Chocolate Pizza with Crunch.
Max Brenner offers an education on the art of eating or drinking chocolate. Their aim is to create a new chocolate culture - which sounds like the type of culture I want to be a part of.
Check out their
website here and I would recommend getting in soon - let us know what you think.

If you're looking for somewhere new to try this weekend, why not do what I did and check out the new bars popping up all over the city. From George to Charlotte and all the way down to Eagle St Pier, some exciting new venues are popping up and service some seriously good food and drinks.
My new favourite is Bavarian Bier Cafe. It has a great view, lots of drinks and for the meat eaters (I'm not one) I've been told the schnitzel is pretty amazing. In the same complex (Eagle St Pier) you can also visit Jude or Sake. Jude serves up tasty and hearty food and Sake is modern japanese food with a seriously creative difference.
If you're looking for the perfect little hole in the wall, Richards & Richards is the new bar opened by the Richards Brothers. After the success of their menswear store, the boys decided to branch out into their love of good food and wine too. The pizzas are yummo and the crowd is very cool.
At the very top of the city on George St, The Villager Hotel - a hotspot with a great crew and all the right elements. Check out the website and roll in for a cocktail - if you get lucky at the casion first, then try the $500 cocktail! Now there's an experience

I'll admit - I'm a keen netballed. Before you scoff, hear me out - because I have converted more than a handful of sports loving men to play a game of mixed netball.
This fast paced and easy to learn game is a lot of fun and a great team sport. No room for white line fever, everybody's got their own part to play and their own section to play in. No matter what your strength is, you can find a position in netball that suits you.
It's also far from being a girls game. Personally, I've endured injuries, gashes and bleeding to rival any forward in rugby. I also have to admit, the competitive side in me has also been responsible for some heavy handed defence over a particularly annoying or pushy opponent.
So if you love the thrill of the netball court, whether your a keen centre, sharp shooter or diligent defender then sign up to a team this season. Its fun, great for fitness and an awesome way to meet people!
Check out a list of netball clubs here

The verdict is in - and while I haven't been there (yet!) it's top of my list. In fact - I might go there this weekend. The new mexican restaurant, Guzman Y Gomez, has found a huge following in Sydney and now opens its first store in Fortitude Valley.
The food is fresh, tasty and cheap - and the the margarita's are definitely tempting me!
Check it out and let me know - or maybe we'll run into each other there!
Happy Mexican!

Are you a little bit Urban, or a little bit Country?
Maybe somewhere in between or ready to find out? I’m a lover of all music, so the 2011 Urban and Country music festival looks right up my alley!
The exciting new concert series brings bands like Evermore, Thirsty Merc, The Potbelleez and Amy Meredith together for the Urban concerts and the best national and international country acts like The McClymonts, James Reyne and Joe Nichols.
Throw in a rodeo, fire twirlers, line dancing, camping and more to be announced and it sounds like an adventure thats a little out of the ordinary and totally awesome fun.

If it’s only one day in the year you make an effort to get involved, make it this Sunday!
Hundreds of thousands of people from around Australia all join together for one day to help turn Australia into a cleaner and greener country. I know it feels like one person can’t make a difference, but the Clean Up Australia Day has been utilising the power of bringing individuals together for over 20 years.
There are so many ways to get involved, join a local team, volunteer or just get some friends together and live cleaner and greener for one day. It’s doing the little things that counts and when we all do them together we can make a big difference.
Check out the website here: http://www.cleanup.org.au/au/
I just stumbled across this little gem, and it looks very cool! The Friends of Folk Festival promotes itself as being “a family-friendly music/arts festival run by the people, for the people; a festival that fuses art, community and local business; where friends and strangers gather to share good music, good food, and explore the tapestry of our local arts scene!”
After the demise of some of our iconic live music venues, this festival team is leading the charge to support the local music and arts industry in Brisbane. The festival looks super fun, heaps of acts including music and comedy, visual artists, market stalls and more.
Check out the website, pre-sale tickets are only $44 + $5 booking fee. Artists include Robert Forster, Don Walker, The Gin Club, Andrew Morris, Asa Broomhall, Emma Dean, Tara Simmons, Hotel Motel and many, many more.

His thoughts on the competition were “We are not professionals, only students who have the spirit and desire to learn more and achieve our dreams. Avant Garde has given me a great opportunity to share my creativity and further my career” he said.
For more information, see www.queensplazashopping.com.au and get involved today to further your career!
The Competition is open for entries on February 14, 2011 and close on March 25.
Finalists will be announced April 1 with voting open from then until April 22.

With the weather being so up and down these days, a night or an afternoon in with some great dvd's is always a great way to chill out.
Next time you're are Blockbuster though, skip the new release section and head to the old school area. Personally, I believe they just don't make movies with the charm, originality and humour of 20 years ago and a good session with the old classics is chicken soup for the soul!
If you're unsure where to go, then hope online, time in must see movies and you will find a host of sites that recommend films.
Of, if you want to know the flicks I recommend most highly then check out:
Empire Records
The Breakfast Club
True Lies
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Die Hard
The Commitments
Pretty Woman
True Lies
Sabrina
Any Elvis movie
Gidget
Puberty Blues
The Usual Suspects

The Big Lebowski
The Graduate
Annie Hall

The fitness industry has been growing at a rapid rate for years now. Every month there seems to be a new offer, new gym or new fitness regime. As someone who likes to get out and try new things a lot, i’m looking forward to checking out the new Snap 24/7 Fitness gym that has opened up on my street. Their website promises programs and support that I’ve never seen before and the no contracts offer seems perfect for people who move around a lot (like students!) There’s one nearby in Mt Gravatt, but I’ve had a look through their website and found a one week free trial deal that seems good too.
Check it out and let us know what you think?

Festivals are fun right – getting muddy, or dirty or sweaty and clamouring among thousands of mad fans to honour your favourite band or act. It’s the stuff of once in a lifetime opportunities.
But sometimes, don’t you think it would be nice to enjoy the music without the craziness? Enter A Day On The Green festival, affectionately nicknamed the “Big Day Out for Adults”. This event is held in the picturesque landscape of wineries across Australia and welcomes some of the biggest names of today and yesterday to the stage.
Guests bring their own picnic blanket and basket and set themselves up for a day of great food and wine and of course music!
